H Beams and Hollow Sections for a Samsung Industrial Project in South Korea

Q355B hollow sections and H beams were sourced and checked for further cutting and welding on a Samsung industrial project in South Korea.

Project Background

The buyer was an engineering and fabrication company working on a Samsung industrial project in South Korea.

Its team imports steel materials from China, then cuts, welds and fabricates them according to the drawings provided by the end customer. The finished members may be used in factory buildings, power plants and sewage treatment facilities.

The buyer was not looking for whichever stock was easiest to obtain. The material source mattered because the sections would go through further processing after delivery.

During the first discussions, the buyer gave us the required material grades and section sizes. The order included hollow sections and H beams. The project record lists 400 × 200 × 10 mm and W33 × 10 among the specifications.

Because the end customer applied strict material controls, we did not send the enquiry to a wide range of small producers. We checked the available supply with established mills and factories that could produce the required sections.

Confirming the Material and Section Sizes

The order included Q355B steel and ASTM A572 structural steel. The exact ASTM A572 grade was not included in the supplied project record.

The product photos show several H-beam sizes stored at the factory. Some sections are stacked horizontally, while others stand with their ends facing outward. Identification labels are visible on many of the beams.

Another photo shows hollow sections stacked inside the workshop. The open ends make the section shape and wall visible. The sections appear in more than one width, although the complete size list was not provided for this article.

The photos record the products prepared at the factory. They do not show the full order quantity, material certificate numbers or the final piece count.

Dimension Checks at the Factory

The supplied inspection photos show two measurements on an H-beam section.

In one photo, a tape measure runs across the depth of the beam. The web, upper flange and lower flange are visible around the measuring point.

A second photo shows the tape placed across the flange width. These checks helped compare the finished section with the dimensions listed in the order documents.

The photos show the measuring actions, but they do not include a complete inspection sheet. No tolerance, sampling rate or final inspection result has therefore been added.

The workshop photos also show labels attached to individual groups of H beams. These labels helped keep different sections separate while the material remained in storage.

Reviewing the Buyer’s Fabrication Process

The buyer planned to carry out its own cutting and welding after receiving the material.

That point mattered during the technical discussion. Cutting, welding and any later heat input had to follow the fabrication procedure prepared for the final structure.

We raised the question of post-fabrication heat treatment with the buyer and recommended that its technical team review whether it was required after processing. This was not presented as a general requirement for every Q355B or ASTM A572 section. The decision depended on the welding procedure, section thickness, processing method and end-customer specification.

The aim was to settle that point before the material entered fabrication. It would have been much harder to revise the process after the members had already been cut and welded.

Shipment to South Korea

The structural steel was shipped on October 9, 2024.

The supplied photos show finished H beams and hollow sections at the factory, but they do not show the packing or loading process. For that reason, no packaging method, container type or loading arrangement has been added.

Notes for Similar Structural Steel Buyers

When steel will be cut and welded after delivery, send the supplier both the material list and the relevant fabrication requirements.

For hollow sections, identify the outside dimensions, wall thickness, length, steel grade and quantity. For H beams or W sections, use the complete section designation shown on the drawing or purchase list.

Do not use an incomplete entry such as “A572” when the project requires a particular grade. The purchase order, material certificate and fabrication drawing should use the same material designation.

Any requirement for preheating, stress relief or heat treatment should also be settled before production. It should come from the approved welding procedure and the end-customer specification rather than being added after fabrication has started.
