Solar Mounting Steel Channels Supplied for an Auckland Project
A New Zealand buyer ordered custom solar mounting steel channels in three sizes after drawings, tooling, and dimensions were confirmed.
Project Background
The first inquiry came by email from a buyer working on a solar mounting project in Auckland. It was not a standard stock request. The buyer needed several channel sizes, along with brackets made to a project-specific punching arrangement.
The buyer already had a regular supplier. For that reason, the first discussion did not immediately lead to an order. Our sales team followed up for several months and answered questions about the channel sections, available materials, custom processing, and production time.
The buyer eventually placed a trial order. This gave its purchasing team a way to check the new products before moving more of the project scope to another supplier.

Product Details Confirmed Before Order
The order covered three steel channel specifications:
- 41 × 41 × 2.5 mm
- 41 × 41 × 2.3 mm
- 41 × 21 × 2.0 mm
The stated steel grades were Q235 and S280GD. The channels were intended for solar mounting structures, where the section size, wall thickness, slots, and connection points needed to match the buyer’s bracket arrangement.
The main sections have inward-turned lips along the open side. Rows of elongated slots run along the channel surface. Additional steel profiles are stacked behind the finished channels inside the workshop.
The request also included special models and custom punched supports. The technical team reviewed the buyer’s drawings and passed the required dimensions to the factory.
The factory then checked whether the requested profiles and punching arrangement could be made with the existing production setup. Because the order involved a non-standard configuration, the tooling plan had to be adjusted for the required section and hole arrangement.
Before production started, the main points included the channel dimensions, wall thickness, profile shape, punching position, and compatibility with the related mounting parts. Once these points were confirmed, the factory prepared the tooling and started the trial batch.
Production and Factory Photos
The workshop photo shows long slotted channels stacked in several rows. The cut ends face the camera, making the different channel profiles easy to see.
Another close-up shows the channel cross-sections arranged together. This view is useful for checking the profile shape and the position of the inward-turned edges before the products are packed.
The factory completed the first trial batch within 15 days.
Dimension Checks Before Shipment
The supplied inspection photos record two practical checks.
In one photo, a digital measuring tool is placed on the cut edge of a channel. The tool is being used to check the wall thickness.
Another photo shows a vernier caliper positioned across the channel section. This check helps confirm the main cross-sectional dimension of the finished profile.
The photos document the measuring actions, but they do not provide a complete inspection sheet, sampling quantity, or tolerance record. For that reason, no unconfirmed inspection result has been added.
These checks were particularly relevant because the order included three combinations of channel height and wall thickness. Mixing the sections could create problems when the buyer assembled the channels with its mounting brackets.
From the Trial Batch to Additional Components
After receiving the first batch, the buyer continued discussing other parts required for the same solar mounting work.
The later requests included associated brackets and accessories. For each new drawing, the technical team reviewed the profile, punching arrangement, and connection points before returning the proposal to the buyer.
This gradually expanded the supply scope beyond the original trial channels. Instead of transferring the entire project at the beginning, the buyer added related products after checking the first batch.
That sequence is common when a buyer already has a long-term supplier. A small custom order allows the purchasing and technical teams to compare dimensions, processing time, and drawing handling without immediately moving the complete project order.
Shipment
The steel channels and related solar mounting components were shipped to New Zealand in March 2025.
Notes for Similar Solar Mounting Buyers
For custom solar mounting channels, a basic size such as 41 × 41 mm is not enough for production.
The inquiry should also identify the wall thickness, channel length, steel grade, slot dimensions, hole pitch, edge distance, and the orientation of the punched surface. A cross-sectional drawing is especially useful when the channel includes inward lips or a non-standard opening.
Buyers should also provide the drawings for the matching brackets. This allows the factory to compare the channel slots with the bracket holes and connection points before preparing tooling.
When several channel sizes are included in one order, each bundle should be identified by section and wall thickness. The same identification should appear on the packing list so the installation team can separate the materials after arrival.
