1,500 Tons of Seamless Pipes and Fittings for a Southeast Asia Oil Pipeline Project
A 1,500-ton order of ASTM A106 Grade B seamless pipes and carbon steel fittings was produced and shipped for an oil pipeline project.
Project Background
The enquiry ran for about six months before the buyer placed the order.
The buyer was sourcing pipes and fittings for an oil pipeline project in Southeast Asia. The first technical package covered a wide range of sizes and fitting types. Some clauses also went beyond the conditions normally stated for the products.
We did not return the file with a general “accepted” response. Our team went through it item by item. We marked the points the factory could follow, the points that needed clarification, and the requirements that required a deviation.
The buyer reviewed those comments and sent back questions or revised documents. In some cases, we needed to provide additional technical data before the item could be closed. This continued until both sides were working from the same requirements.

Revising the Pipe and Fitting List
The final order covered about 1,500 tons of seamless pipes and fittings.
The pipe size range ran from 21.3 × 3.73 mm to 323.8 × 9.53 mm. The pipes were specified as ASTM A106 Grade B, while the carbon steel fittings were listed as ASTM A234 WPB. ASTM identifies A106/A106M as a seamless carbon steel pipe specification and A234/A234M as a specification for wrought carbon and alloy steel piping fittings.
The fitting list took more time than the pipe list. It included different product types, sizes, wall schedules, and connection requirements. The buyer also revised the quantities several times during the quotation stage.
Whenever the buyer changed the list, we went through it again from the start. We removed the cancelled items, entered the new sizes and quantities, and worked out the price again. The factory also checked whether the changes would add time to production.
We kept the revisions separate rather than editing several versions at once. That helped prevent an old size or quantity from moving into the final purchase list.
Checking the Finished Products
The workshop photos show long seamless pipes stacked in rows. Most of the visible pipe ends have protective caps, and labels are fixed to many of the caps.
The pipes are grouped by size. Smaller-diameter bundles can be seen behind the larger pipes.
One close-up records a diameter measurement at the end of a large pipe. A digital caliper is placed across the opening, and the display reads 273.75 mm. The photo records the measuring step only. The required tolerance and inspection result were not included in the information provided for this case.
The fitting photos show black butt-weld elbows stacked with their openings facing outward. Different opening sizes are visible.
Another image shows machined flanges stacked on a pallet. One visible marking includes ASME B16.5, A105, 150#, and 4 inches. We have not applied that marking to every flange in the order because the complete flange schedule was not provided.
Preparing the Pipes for Shipment
The long pipes were tied into bundles with metal straps. Protective caps covered the ends, and identification labels were attached to the capped ends.

At the shipping yard, several pipe bundles are laid out in front of stacked containers. Other bundles can be seen inside open containers in the background.
A separate loading photo shows rows of pipes filling the container opening. Blue caps cover the visible ends, and individual labels are attached to many of them.
The pictures record workshop storage, truck handling, yard staging, and container loading. The full packing list and container type were not included, so those details have not been added.
Completing the 1,500-Ton Supply
From order confirmation to the final shipment, the work took about three months. The first goods went out near the end of 2022, and the rest followed in early 2023. Before loading each batch, we checked it against the buyer’s latest material list.
With this many pipes and fittings, even a small change could affect several parts of the order. A revised fitting quantity could change the material requirement, production sequence, packing list, and shipping plan. For that reason, every update was checked before it went to the factory.
The remaining products were completed and dispatched by early 2023.
Notes for Similar Oil Pipeline Buyers
With an order this large, mistakes often start when different teams work from different versions of the list. Keep one master spreadsheet, add a date or revision number to every update, and mark changed or deleted items clearly. Do not leave part of the revision in an email and the rest in an attachment.
For each pipe, keep the outside diameter, wall thickness, length, grade, quantity, and end condition on the same line. List elbows, tees, reducers, and flanges separately. List the flanges separately, with the standard, size, pressure class, facing, material, quantity, and required marking. Keep the pipe and fitting standards separate as well: ASTM A106/A106M covers seamless carbon steel pipe, while ASTM A234/A234M covers wrought carbon and alloy steel fittings.
Before production begins, close every technical deviation in writing. Once the buyer approves the final list, use that exact revision for production, inspection, packing, and shipment. Any later change should go into a new revision rather than being added quietly to the old file.
